Essex Scenic Byway: Corridor Management Plan

Byway Route

The 85-mile Byway travels through 13 communities in Essex County. The Byway is also located within the Essex National Heritage Area, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to recognize the significance of the region's abundant historical, cultural and natural resources.

The Essex Heritage Scenic Byway is composed of two sections that join in the city of Gloucester. One primary route begins on Route 1A in Lynn and proceeds northerly until turning onto Route 129 through Swampscott and Marblehead, turning again onto Route 114 before entering Salem, where the byway rejoins Route 1A. Following Route 1A over the Salem-Beverly Bridge, the byway switches to coastal Route 127, which it follows through Beverly, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and into the Cape Ann communities of Gloucester and Rockport. The byway travels along both Route 127 and Route 127A along the eastern shore of Cape Ann and also loops around East Gloucester.

A second primary route starts in Newburyport on High Street and follows Route 1A southerly through the towns of Newbury, Rowley, and Ipswich where it merges with Route 133. The route then follows Route 133 through Essex to the intersection with Route 127 in Gloucester.
