South County Sustainable Economy Project
Washington County, Rhode Island (2003)
Assisted two non-profits and nine towns to develop
regional strategies for sustainable economic growth in “South
County” (Washington County), RI. One of the fastest growing
areas in Southern New England, South County is struggling to manage
growth and its impacts. Taintor & Associates developed local
and regional goals, identified suitable types of economic development
for the region, highlighted sites that could support development, and
recommended ways to integrate planning across town boundaries. The
Sustainable Economy project was also linked to the County’s Greenspace
Protection Project, and was designed to strengthen the region's existing
development patterns and to protect its valuable natural and cultural
resources.

Pinelands Rural Economic Development Pilot Program
New Jersey Pinelands (1999)
Assisted the New Jersey Pinelands Commission in a
pilot program to develop sustainable and appropriate economic development
strategies for five study areas encompassing a total of seven
municipalities in South Jersey. The project resulted in specific
economic development strategies for each area, including:
ecotourism strategies for three
townships along the Mullica River Corridor, and for two townships along the
Delaware Bayshore;
infrastructure and design recommendations
for two townships along major regional arterials; and
a three-pronged approach to
revitalization of an historic borough, including enhancement
and positioning of the village center, support for commercial growth
around a small airport, and providing space for small contractors
serving nearby resort areas. The recommendations of this project
are being pursued by the Pinelands Commission, and the Pilot Program
is expected to be expanded to serve other communities in the region.

Ecotourism and Economic Development Feasibility Study
Sheffield, Massachusetts (1995)
Prepared an economic development program for the
town of Sheffield (pop. 3,200) in the Berkshire hills region of
western Massachusetts. Entitled "New Directions from Old Strengths,"
the strategy builds on the area's traditional economy of agriculture,
small manufacturing enterprises, and cottage industries; and seeks to
complement these traditional activities by promoting a small-scale
environmental and cultural tourism sector.
